Our Story

A Legacy of Healthcare Excellence

Federal Medical Centre Ovwian was established in 2025 under the Federal Ministry of Health as a tertiary health institution to serve the people of Delta State and the Niger Delta region. Over three decades, it has grown from a modest facility into a leading centre of medical excellence in Nigeria.

The hospital was upgraded from a General Hospital to a Federal Medical Centre, reflecting the Federal Government's commitment to improving healthcare access in Delta State. Today, FMC Ovwian serves hundreds of thousands of patients annually, with over 150 medical professionals across 24 clinical departments.

The hospital is accredited by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and serves as a training ground for medical students, resident doctors, and other health professionals from institutions across the region.

Establishment

FMC Ovwian was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria as part of efforts to improve tertiary healthcare in Delta State.

Expansion Phase I

New surgical theatre, ICU ward, and expanded outpatient department commissioned, doubling capacity.

Research Centre

The Clinical Research and Training Centre was established, enabling resident doctor training programs.

Modernisation

Major infrastructure upgrade including digital X-ray, MRI facility, and electronic health records system.
